A drilling rig is a machine that creates holes in the earth's subsurface. Drilling rigs can be massive structures housing equipment used to drill water wells, oil wells, or natural gas extraction wells, or they can be small enough to be moved manually by one person and such are called augers.

Now one of the largest onshore drilling companies in the United States, Unit Drilling Company operates 95 onshore drilling rigs in the Anadarko and Arkoma Basins, the Rocky Mountains and the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast.
The Drilling Productivity Report uses recent data on the total number of drilling rigs in operation along with estimates of drilling productivity and estimated changes in production from existing oil and natural gas wells to provide estimated changes in oil and natural gas production for seven key regions.
