During the first half of the nineteenth century, mechanical crushing was not cheaply available. Stone had been crushed for applications such as Macadam road metal exclusively by hand, using the cheapest available labour, such as convicts and workhouse inmates.

Many are even located underground, in the mines (where they actually replace yet another wire rope transportation technology from the past that I did not mention here - carts on rails pulled by wire ropes).
