Wood is nonuniform within heartwood and sapwood layers. In general, trees produce annual rings. Such rings reflect the changing environment. Rapid growth during the spring produces "earlywood" which is less dense and composed of large cells with thinner walls allowing for efficient water transport to support intense photosynthesis.
