Cement specifications clearly needed a way of prescribing the fineness of cement, and the sieve method was written into standards in the absence of any more useful measure, despite the fact that it provided little guidance as to the likely quality of the cement, particularly as the number of different grinding technologies multiplied.
Cast irons like steels are basically alloys of iron and carbon. Cast irons contain between 2 and 6.67 percent carbon. Since the high carbon content tends to make cast irons very brittle, most commercially manufactured types are in the range of 2.5 to 4.0 percent carbon.
We have a similar issue after our cabinet maker painted the new cabinets with a (white) conversion varnish. I've had to take off all the cabinet doors and drawers to off gas in the garage but I still have throat/ear irritation constantly.
